“We are all very happy to see it," said his daughter Linda Bloom. “Hackensack High School has been his whole passion and life. He had been offered a superintendent position in Hawaii back then and dad sad no, he was staying in Hackensack.”

The dedication will be held in the high school auditorium from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 26.

Now 86, Bloom, of Maywood, began his teaching career in Hackensack after receiving his Master of Arts from New York University. He was appointed Chairman of the Social Studies Department in 1963, Assistant Principal in 1967 and has served as Principal of Hackensack High School since 1970, retired 1992.

“He was instrumental in getting the bridge completed," Schools Supt. Karen Lewis said.

The First Street bridge is the third building of the high school and has three floors. There is a library/media center on the top floor and data processing on the bottom floor.

“Both he and our mom, Rita, have a strong belief in family and community. This, coupled with a passion for education and life-long learning has benefited the lives of so many students, educators, parents and community members — bringing people together, 'bridging' both knowledge and service to create the best for each day as a foundation toward a better future,” said Harold’s daughter, Heidi (Bloom) Cislo.

Bloom married Rita in June of 1950 and had three children, Linda, Heidi, and Steven. All three went on to attend Hackensack High School

“My dad's leadership has always been fueled by compassion, sincerity, loyalty and love,” Heidi said. “We have had the opportunity to see this first-hand and worked hard to pass that legacy along in all of the things that we do. We are so proud of our dad and feel lucky to call Hackensack High School our home and the people in it our family.”
